Grenada Weekend - Scotland 2007

3 years ago Lord Soley a previous M.P for Acton contacted me about a proposed partnership working with John Home Robertson, whose ancestors were involved in the slave trade in Grenada.

Following telephone calls and written contact with both John Home Robertson and the directors of Paxton House I organised a meeting to take place at the Grenada High Commission to involve the wider Grenadia community. John Malden, Director of Paxton House attended and addressed the meeting informing them of the links with Grenada and Paxton House.

Following the meeting Descendants continued to work closely with John Malden, Director of Paxton House, to organise a trip to Paxton House for the children of Descendants, their parents and other Grenadians to come together for a “Grenada Weekend”.

Descendants were working on a project to mark the big century of the abolition of the slave trade 1807-2007. The project had several elements which included the making of a film “Broken but not Defeated” about slaves taken from Nigeria Africa to Grenada in the Caribbean and fighting for freedom.

The visit to Paxton House took place over the weekend of 30th June – 1st July 2007. The group of 43 children, parents, volunteers and teachers, and members of the Grenada community travelled to Berwick upon Tweed, spending the weekend at Condignly Youth hostel.

On the morning the children played on the beach at the bottom of the hostel before heading off to Paxton House. The children had to perform in the main Parent Group because of the rain. Descendants children performed by singing and African dancing, one of the children sang the Grenada National Anthem.
