Descendants – The Book

About The Book

Echoes From the Past charts some of the unique and extraordinary achievements of Descendants youth organisation, from its founding in 1993 to March 2012.

Read how Descendants young people met the Queen at Buckingham Palace, and performed at her Golden Jubilee parade. How they were invited to help launch an education bill, with the then Prime Minister, Tony Blair. Follow Descendants as they perform at the Royal Albert Hall for Patti Boulaye’s charity, act in a film made and directed by Pogus Caesar (which was shown alongside Steve McQueen’s films at the Lumiere Theatre), visit Oxford University, have their artwork exhibited at Pitzhanger Manor Art Gallery, raise money for charities, and meet famous and inspirational people.

This book is inspirational reading for young people, parents, teachers, youth workers, and anyone who believes in what young people can achieve. It is all the more important that young people and adults, all members of the Descendants community, have worked together to write the story.Echoes from the past book cover

The Launch Event

On 17th March 2012, Descendants ‘Echoes from the past’ was launched at Priory community Centre. Distinguished guests included the Deputy Mayor Cll Mohammed Aslam and his wife, Professor Gus John and Mr Willis Wilkie, past Pride in our people winner, who is featured in the book. The inspirational performer Miz Camara, who is also featured in the book, and Careeta Robert Green Founder of Born with a gift, a former young person who attended Descendants and went on to volunteer with Descendants. A number of past young people, their parents and past volunteers who contributed to the book.

This was an emotional book launch as we remembered Terry Monaghan and Delores (Neriah Kumah) both from the Jiving Lindy hoppers and both had recently passed away from cancer. At Delores funeral she had asked for a collection to be taken up and this was presented to Descendants on the night by her Mum, as this was her final wish. We were all moved by her Mothers words of encouragement to the children and young people. The money presented was £1,000.

Feedback about the book was very positive. The book charts the work of the charity from its beginning in 1993, to it present day. The book has photos when it first began, articles from Ealing Gazette, and much more. It features quotes and testimony from our Patrons, past and present volunteers, parents and most importantly the children of Descendants, past and present.
